The potential of solar energy

Our supplies of energy and water, which are so basic for the future of humankind require well understood, internationally coordinated, courageous and convincing answers. Globalisation and increased technological competence have opened many doors towards different models of international cooperation and information sharing promoting intricate and interconnected solutions to our problems. The Mediterranean Solar Plan launched in 2008 represents an important example of how we are now taking powerful steps to defend humankind against a global climate and energy crisis.

But already today, PV electricity is cheaper than many people think. In the coming years it will become even more cost effective and competitive - and qualify therefore as a vital part of the EU's energy future. Under the right policy and market conditions, PV competitiveness with grid electricity can be achieved in some markets as early as 2013, and then in the whole Union by 2020 (independent from national incentive schemes). To ensure that this potential take up is realised, more can be done by the European Institutions.

Internationally widespread deployment, as promoted by the DESERTEC programme creates possibilities for an even wider vision to be realised. Beyond the first pilot projects which have received funding under FP7, the project has received support from different groups of our global society. Closer cooperation with the EU's neighbourhood can also promote transfer of knowledge and capacity building, support to third countries in implementing sustainable energy policies and investment opportunities for European companies.
