What potential for energy wood?

Meeting - Tuesday, 22th of November 2011, 10:00

The European Union has set the target of 20% of renewable energy by 2020. Bioenergy accounts for two third of renewable energies. As generator of heat and light when burned, wood biomass can contribute significantly to this objective. Some claim that bioenergy from forests can take its part in meeting the challenges of our time, i.e: mitigate climate change, create job opportunities, secure energy supply and achieve low carbon economy etc. On the contrary, several opinions have voiced their concern and distrust towards wood energy because of its potentially detrimental impacts on biodiversity and the carbon storage capacity of forests.

The conference will seek to establish under what conditions wood energy is a truly sustainable renewable source of energy.
